'Twas the Month before Outbreak, and all through the States,
Our Guv’ners were clueless, which wasn’t that Great.
Our System was ready; our Safety Nets there,
With Knowledge that Viruses need Different Care.
Our Constitution was prepped, but hardly been read;
Visions of Panic in Pop Media’s head!
And POTUS in White House, and I sitting home,
Had assumed that “Good Order” would be our “New Norm.”
When out from the States there arose such a Fuss,
I sprang from my Sofa and said “What the Cuss?”
Away to Amazon I flew like The Flash,
Tore open the Package and hauled out My Mask.
The Light on the Plastic of the Overseas Cloth,
Gave a Lustre of Gross to my Feeling of Sloth.
I hardly believed it when I heard “Shut It All Down!”
Emerge from the Mouths of the Mayors around Town.
So I went towards my Sofa, with My Nog In My Hand,
And settled in to watch the State of the Land.
More rapid than shnoughs* the virals they came,
And I fought the Good Fight, tho I screwed up its name.
“Flatten the Curve! Hold the Line! Save the Person! Beat the ‘Vid!
Make Haste! Look Good! Stay Inside, Stupid Kid!
To your Home! To your Couch! To your Booze and your Drugs!
No need for Resilience! No need for… a Hug.”
As Soldiers and Fighters called to War without Draft,
I sent forth my Immune System, I had the Last Laugh.
Our Stats were impressive; we saved the Old Folks,
The Weak Folks, the Dumb Folks, the Douchebags and Dolts.
We followed our hearts and we hailed our brave souls,
Despite the fact that our Guvs lost sight of our goals.
And when it was long done and we’d had our fair share
Of vaxes and nature and real and fake care,
Of public records and cash to Good but Big Pharma,
Of medical discrimination and all-around Bad Karma,
We thought: “Well, that was close! We’ll go back to school!
We’ll learn what just happened – we’re Nobody’s Fool!
The Math is all there! The Science collected!
This is Cool, this is Neat, we are so Darn Connected!”
But the reality was different, the goals still quite Lost.
“What happened?” we wailed “To educational cost?”
But sad as the rat under my outdoor food stall,
No studies were had of anything at all.
Just masks to block our Water and Air.
And locks to block our Community Care.
More Ignorance and Hate and Lawyers and Talk.
But no Copeland, no Carver, no Barton, no Salk.
So here we are at the End of Year Two,
Back to New Normal, and Guvs with no Clue.
Save a few people ‘round town who cannot abide
With the Loss of our Freedom to want to Survive,
To Communicate, Care, Contain, and Continue
Cuz’ our country ain’t just another bad venue.
Our Show is the Shiz, and to heck with the Mess
It’s why we are good at beating the rest.
So hang your Mask on a Tree; spike your Nog with some Vax.
And toast a More Natural “New Normal” …with Facts.
(*shnough = a sneeze/cough that expels germy snot and spit from your nose and mouth at the exact same time)
